Petra is about 3 1/2 hours away from Amman (Jordan's capital city). It's an incredible place and has been used in "Indiana Jones and the last crusade" movie. 
El-Khazneh (the treasury), colonnaded street ans royal tombs. Despite it's huge facade (and also despite what the indie movie shown), El-Khazneh has only three small and empty room within. 
To reach Al-Deir (the monastery), you have to climb a long stairway, but it's definitely worth it.
